בֻּלְבּוּל (Bulbul) — penis (childish slang); Bulbul (bird)
Etymology
The word bulbul entered Hebrew primarily as the name for the songbird Pycnonotus xanthopygus. Zoologist Israel Aharoni initially proposed the name bilbil in 1923, but the Hebrew-speaking public preferred the Arabic pronunciation bulbul, which itself traces back to the Persian word for nightingale, literally meaning "chatterer." In the mid-20th century, the word gained additional layers through Iraqi immigrants who brought the game dudes, in which the small stick struck by a larger one was called a bulbul.
The transition of bulbul into a common childish slang term for the penis is believed to have occurred between the late 1970s and early 1980s. While linguists Dan Ben-Amotz and Netiva Ben-Yehuda suggested it evolved via metonymy from the slang bulbulim (referring to testicles), others point to the common cross-linguistic practice of naming the organ after birds—similar to the English "cock." Interestingly, the airing of the children's show Bulbul HaKabulbul in 1976 initially carried no anatomical connotations, suggesting the slang shift solidified shortly thereafter.
The first formal lexicographical record of the anatomical sense appeared in 1982 in the Achul-Manyuki Dictionary of Spoken Hebrew. Despite its origins in bird-watching and street games, the word has become the standard "polite" slang used by parents and children in Israel.
