The Secret History of Hebrew
From the Bible to Balagan
Every Hebrew word is a fossil. Crack it open and you'll find the fingerprints of the people who made it — translators, poets, maidservants, army generals. This keynote traces 3,000 years of Hebrew through the words themselves: from a 15,000-year-old word for sickle, through the medieval scholars who built the vocabulary for "nature," to the Arabic slang that entered Hebrew through the army, and the untranslatable word davka. Not the myth of one man's miracle — but the story of a civilization that never stopped creating.

The Tisha B'Av Riddle
How Judaism Was Reborn from Destruction
Neither Temple was actually destroyed on the 9th of Av. The Bible says the 7th, or the 10th. Josephus, who watched the Second Temple burn, says the 10th. So who chose the 9th — and why? This talk follows the evidence to Rabbi Akiva, who reverse-engineered the date from Zechariah's prophecy, embedding hope into the very structure of mourning. Along the way, we uncover how a temporary instruction manual became the Mishnah, how a Roman emperor nearly rebuilt the Temple, and how the Judaism we practice today was an accident that became eternal.

Purim: The Holiday Behind the Mask
A 2,500-Year Journey from War to Carnival
When you strip away the costumes and cookies, the story of Purim doesn't make sense — unless you read it as a political pamphlet covering up a real civil war. This source-based investigation traces Purim from a Jewish military alliance with Xerxes in 484 BCE, through the Babylonian rabbis who added the drinking, the European Jews who replaced dangerous bonfires with noise, the Italian carnival that gave us masks and hamantaschen, and the American ballrooms that turned it into a gala. Every layer of the holiday is a mask over the previous one.

The High Holidays
How a Single Moment in Jerusalem Shaped a Season
In 398 BCE, a scribe named Ezra opened a scroll before a weeping crowd at Jerusalem's Water Gate. That single public reading set our entire Tishrei season in motion. This source-based detective story traces how Sukkot was 'discovered' in the text, how Rosh Hashanah began as Ezra's improvised holiday and slowly became our New Year under Greek influence, how Yom Kippur may have emerged from a murder in the Temple, and how Simchat Torah was a medieval invention from Baghdad. Each holiday is a layer of creative response to crisis — and the process hasn't stopped.

The Sabbath
From Mystery to Meaning
The weekly Sabbath is virtually absent from the historical books of the Bible. Warriors never pause campaigns for it. Solomon's Temple dedication ignores it. When it does appear, it means something entirely different — a monthly lunar observance, not a weekly rest. This talk traces the Sabbath's dramatic transformation: from its Babylonian origins through Nehemiah's enforcement at Jerusalem's gates, the rabbinic invention of the 39 forbidden categories of work, and the surprising origins of our most cherished Friday night rituals — from gefilte fish born of legal constraint to challah descended from a Germanic goddess.

What Hosts Say
Hosting Elon Gilad as scholar-in-residence was a true gift to our community. Elon has a rare ability to take big, fascinating ideas — about the magic of Hebrew, the hidden history of our holidays, and the story of Zionism — and make them feel intimate, accessible, and alive. His sessions felt less like lectures and more like shared explorations, full of curiosity, laughter, and meaningful conversation. If you have the opportunity to host Elon, don't hesitate.
— Rabbi Natan Trief, Temple Sinai, Atlanta, GA
Elon has a talent to teach complex concepts in a way that all present can understand. His presentation style is engaging and with his catch phrase 'now you know' helps the audience personally grow and learn.
— Rabbi Daniel Schweber, Temple Israel of Great Neck, NY
We had Elon join us for a summer weekend as scholar in residence, and it was delightful. Elon may be the most accessible expert in the world when it comes to the hidden history of Hebrew etymology. As a result, from our most engaged learners to our newest members, everyone who interacted with him took away something fresh and interesting. He was a hit at Torah Study where he presented on the 'true history' of Tisha B'Av; which he presented as cross between a mystery thriller and an archeological dig. He was also superb informally chatting with our 20's and 30's at a backyard pool party, while on one foot talking about where the various names for ice cream and popsicles come from in Israel. He's an "Israel" scholar, who doesn't need to talk about violence, politics, the conflict, or security — but rather the thriving life, whimsical decisions, and linguistic creativity of our people.
— Rabbi Samuel Kaye, Holy Blossom Temple, Toronto, Canada
Our community loved and appreciated Elon Gilad's expertise, insight, humor and charm. He managed to take scholarly topics like Semitic etymology and ancient history and make them lively and relevant to our diverse audience, knowledgeable and novice, Jewish and non-Jewish alike. Above all, Elon is a mensch who expressed genuine interest in getting to know our community members and crafting an experience that would be of the most value to us. Thank you, Elon, for sharing your gifts with us here in West Virginia!
— Rabbi Adam Berman, Congregation B'nai Jacob, Charleston, WV
