בֻּלְבּוּל (Bulbul) — bulbul / penis (slang)
Etymology
The word bulbul originally entered modern Hebrew as the name for a common songbird, specifically the White-spectacled Bulbul (Pycnonotus xanthopygos). The name was formally established by the pioneering Hebrew zoologist Israel Aharoni in his 1923 textbook Torat He-Hai. The term is a loanword from Arabic, which in turn adopted it from Persian, where it literally means "chatterer." In early modern Hebrew, the word was also occasionally used as a nickname for a confused or "muddled" person (mebulbal).
The evolution of bulbul into the most common Israeli children's euphemism for the penis is subject to several competing theories. Lexicographers Dan Ben-Amotz and Netiva Ben-Yehuda first recorded bulbulim (plural) as slang for testicles in 1972, suggesting it may have derived from bulbusim (bulbs) or the English word "balls." By the 1980s, the singular bulbul had shifted to mean the penis.
Another prominent theory suggests a linguistic analogy to English, where bird names like "cock" or "bird" serve as anatomical slang. This is reflected in Israeli culture, most notably in Hanoch Levin’s 1977 song "The Little Pants Bird," which uses avian metaphors for the organ. Other folk etymologies point to the game of Dudes (a cricket-like street game), where the small stick was called a bulbul, or to the Arabic word bul (urine).
