How a Birthing Stool Became Hebrew's Word for Crisis

In Hebrew, the word for crisis is mashber. But in the Bible, mashber did not mean "financial crisis" or "political crisis." It belonged to the world of childbirth. In 2 Kings 19:3, King Hezekiah is trapped in Jerusalem during the Assyrian siege of 701 BCE. He sends a message to the prophet Isaiah: "The children have come to the mashber, and there is no strength to deliver." The kingdom is in labor. The child is at the point of birth. And there is no strength left to push. For centuries, this was just a biblical image. Then, in 1876, Moshe Leib Lilienblum needed a Hebrew word for the European concept crisis, or krizis. Many Hebrew alternatives had been tried. None stuck. Lilienblum chose mashber. The choice worked because the original image was so precise: not something already broken, but the moment just before the break. Maximum danger. Maximum effort. Maximum possibility. That is why modern Hebrew uses mashber for a financial crisis, a political crisis, an emotional crisis, an existential crisis. Every mashber still carries the old biblical image: the moment when something may collapse – or be born.
